The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta embraces the diversity that strengthens our community. We believe that all youth should have equitable access to quality education and a path to successful adulthood. And we believe in the wondrous futures they have the opportunity to pursue.

Last Tuesday, the Office of the President announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This bill provides continuing opportunities to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as minor children. It protects nearly 29,000 young Georgians, and over 800,000 youth nationally, from deportation.

The average DACA child came to the United States at age six and has been here for 20 years. Thanks to this program, they work here legally. They pay taxes and social security. Many own homes and have families. They are Georgians.

In an op-ed today in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, entitled DACA recipients are Georgians, too, Chris Marquardt with the Latin American Association said it well – “Much like my four kids, these young immigrants were, in the words of Zac Brown, “raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia pine.” For them, like my kids, this is home. I’ve prayed with them in Georgia churches where, like many in our communities, they praise God for their lives. I’ve seen them in Georgia schools where they have learned to pledge allegiance to the American flag and to work hard chasing the American Dream. It’s safe to say that there’s more red clay under their fingernails than mine. These are good people, hardworking Georgians, who we would all be proud to call neighbors. They deserve a chance to keep growing up here beneath the shade of our Southern pines.”
