It's been over two weeks since Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida and left a path of destruction in its wake. Our neighbors in south Georgia were hit hard by the storm, with many business and homes destroyed.

Recovery will be particularly hard for farmers. Crops were lost and livestock was killed. It is estimated that the Georgia agriculture industry lost $3 billion to Hurricane Michael, including timber, cotton, peanuts and pecans. With disrupted supply chains, those with intact crops are facing uncertainty about when and where to unload their crop after harvest.

Many of our donors want to know how they can help in south Georgia. Below is a list of organizations working on long-term recovery in the area. To view our initial post focused on short-term aid in response to Hurricane Michael, please click here.

  • Farmer Fund, managed by Georgia Organics, provides financial assistance to farmers. While insurance provides some relief to farmers, it is only start as famers attempt to recover from catastrophic losses.
  • Habitat for Humanity will assess the need and provide resources for families affected by Hurricane Michael.
  • Lutheran Services or Georgia provides and directs long-term recovery efforts, including construction management rebuilding and repairing homes impacted by storms and case management. The organization projects it will need at least $100,000 for its long-term recovery to Georgia residents.
  • Salvation Army Georgia provides food and supplies throughout south Georgia.
